The nine-letter answers are to be entered in the correspondingly-numbered first column of the grid.
From each, take one letter and place it in the adjoining shaded column; the remaining letters can be
anagrammed to get an eight-letter answer (clued in random order; lettered for convenience only).
Repeat the process to get a seven-letter answer (again clued in random order).
When properly completed, the shaded columns represent a well-known phrase.
Each clue contains a superfluous word; the first letters of these, in clue order,
provide a place where the phrase might be heard.
